DEATH OF GENERAL COLVILLE.

Major-general Sir Henry Colville, whose death has been reported by cable, was born in 1852. He entered the Tirenadiers in 1870, and from 1880 till 1883 he held the position of General Commander at tho Cape. He served in the Intelligence Department with the Eastern Soudan expedition in 1884, and was present at the battles of El Teb and Tamai, being twice mentioned in despatches. Ho was engaged in. special service in Upper Egypt in 1885, and was chief of the, lntelligence Department of the frontier forces in 1885 and 18?6. Ha was promoted to. the rank of colonel in 1886, and we* employed by the War Office to compile the official history of the Soudancampaign. The deceased was Acting Commissioner in Uganda from 1693 till 1895. He retired from the Grenadier Guards in 1f97,l f 97, and wa« promoted to the rank of major-general the following -year. He commanded the infantry brigade at Gibraltar in 1899, and the Guards Brigade and subsequently the ninth division in South Africa till July, 1900, being mentioned five times in despatches. The deceased waa created C.B. in 1885 and K.C.M.G. in 1895. He was twice married, and is survived by one son.
