IT4 ' welcomed the visiting delegates, and con-* ' gratulated the meeting upon its repreeenta-< tive character. One of the main reason* " for the calling together oi the conference, he said, was to consider the question of the increased co3t of production in printing ■ houses, caused by the higher wages which* now had to be paid in various departments of the trade. He then called upon the representatives of the Dunedin Association, ' with which body the idea of forming a federation originated, to address the meeting. Mr Somerville (the president of tfo* Dunedin Master Printers' Association) said that he estimated that about a million of money was invested in the printing houeetj in New Zealand, and l some thousands oi people were employed in the trade. The time had arrived when step* should be taken to protect the interests of the printing house proprietors, and he therefore would move — "That a federation of the master printers' associations of New Zealand should be formed." The motion was seconded by Me Vauehan, supported by Messrs Banks, Lankshear, M'lndoe, Smith, Whitoombe, and the chairman, and was carried unanimously. It was resolved thjit the name of the new oi»?anisa.tion should be "The Federated Master Printers' Association of New Zealand." and that the executive should consist of Ja president, vice-president, and council of five members. The election of the first office-bearers was then proceeded with, and resulted in the following gentlemen being returned without opposition : — President, Mr P.
