MOMONA.
1 November 30.-Late on the afternoon of Thursday last light rain commenced! to fall, 1 and this developed, as evening approached, into a steady downpour, which, continued without intermission for some hours. Unfortunately a strong wind sprang up immediately upon cessation of the rain, and as it has been blowing hard" ever since tne benefit accruing from the late downfall has not been so great as it would have been if followed by a period of calm weather. Still, the rain has been of much *alue, especially to the turnip and mangold crops, and it would be unjust to complain. We are much more fortunate this year than last, for the turnips have all brairded nicely, and are coming away well, whereas in many instances last year the seed lay for a period extending from six weeks to two months without germinating, and by that time of course (excepting in particularly clean ground) the weeds had obtained a strong lead. This year few weeds are showing mi the turnip fields, and thinning will not be such « laborious process as it was last year. I see some of the farmers have commenced thinning this week, and probably this work will be general in a few days. The yellow weed 1 (ot scilly) in the cornfields is in full bloom just now. Some of the fields are a perfect mass of yellow blossoms, and to an outsider or disinterested person, they present a beautiful appearance. The beauty of the scene will not. however, appeal to the farmer whose fields are infested with this pest. Scholastic. — The local school children, under Mr Chesnej and Miss Cuttle, have been working hard for the examinations, which takes place on Monday, December 2, when it is to be hoped the diligence of both teachers and pupils will be rewarded by a good percentage of passes. Arrangements are well advanced for the annual school concert, which is to be held on December 13. I understand that a very attractive programme has been prepared, and everything points to the entertainment being a very enjoyable one.
