MISS JESSIE MACLACHLAN.
This Scottish prima donna will be heard here again at His Majesty's Theatre for a, series of four concerts, commencing on Efriday, August 2, and the wonderful power of vocalisation with which she iB endowed cannot fail to make her visit one to be remembeaed. Ordinarily a singer arouses by her artistic ability a certain amount of recognition at the hands of those who hear her. But Miss Maclachlan goes further than that. Full of intense patriotism herself, she imbues th« songs on her programme—notably -these of a, warlike character—with such dramatic interest that her hearers are worked up to a pitch of enthusiasm which it is difficult to understand. It is no uncommon thing —»on the contrary, it often happens—-to see the members of her audience on their feet oheerir.g wildly at the clcse of such conge as " A hundred pipers," " Scots wha ha'e. or " Blue bonnets over the Border." But not alone in this particular branch of Celtic-music does Miss Msclachlan excel. Scottish music is full of humour, and her interpretation of such songs as " Comin' thro' the rye," " Whistle and I'll oome tae ye my lad," and more particularly " The I/aird o' Cockpen," is notable for its keen apprecia■tion of the peculiar pawkiness which is their characteristic. On this visit Miss Maclachlan has strengthened her company by the inclusion of Mr Douglas Young, a. Scottish tenor of whom report speaks highly. "With Mar John M'Linden, a clever 'cellist, and Mr R. Buchanan as accompanist, the combination is an excellent one.
