GAMES.
A fine game played between Thr Tarra«ch (White) aud D. Janowski (Black), in the Masters' International Tourney at Ostend. Score and notes are from The Field: — Foitb Knights' Game.
(a) Janowski has the courage of his opinion. He maintains that Black should get the best of it with this form of defence, in spit© of tub experience Schlechtes,
. (b) Nor does he indorse this move (c) This ia an improvement upon 9 ... B-K 3, which he played against Schlechter. But it is still open to question. The best move giving Black the possibility of resistance is 9 ... P-Q 4 previous to the text rkove. (d) His position is certainly better than the one he had with Schlechter at this stage; but that is all. The improvement is only comparative, as he had a lost game with Schlechter. (c) To make room for the advance of the Xt P. White's game plays itself now. (f) A pretty and forcible final combination. A neat specimen of the play of the youthful Russian master (M. Niemzowitsch) in the same tourney is given in the following game played by him against P. S. Leonhardt (Black). Score and notes are from The Field: —
(a) Converting the opening into a Scotch ge.m© with the Berlin Defence. (b) A novelty which takes the opening out of the usual groove, giving White at th« same time plenty of scope. (c) 7 . . . QPx Xt might be considered, but Black played to win a pawn. fo) White giving up the pawn voluntarily, Black should consider seriously the advisability of its capture. (c) A splendid position at the expense only of a doubled pawn. j (f) Better, or rather compulsory, was 15 . . . Xt-Xt 5, followed by Kt-K 4. (g) White is now provided by Black with a ' simple and effective plan, namely, to move hia 1 forces on the open file. (h) 16 ... P-K B 4 would be answered advantageously by 17 B x Xt, R x B; 18 R x R, P x R; 19 R-K 1, etc. (1) A pretty final combination, the sequel of the original play of utilising the open file. (i?P Winning the Knight by force.
