WELLINGTON NOTES.

It .Omeoxra. July 27. Rain foil early it Trentham this morning, and in consequence the enclosures were in » very sloppy state. The course was heavy. The attendance was very satisfactory. The same horses were successful in the double combination is on the second day. After the first race the steward! met to consider the objection lodged by R. Milne (rider of St. Claimer), who alleged that H. Gairns (rider of Kaiufcu), caught hold of his bridle. The stewards, after netting evidence, decided to suspend Cairns during pleasure. The Steeplechase was the most interesting contest during the afternoon — practically a match between the Auckland pair Haydn, and Kliama,, who were equally backed. The other pair were never in it? At the end; of a mile the tiwo fancied candidates -were racing level, and it looked as if another exciting finish, would be witnessed. Khama was outjumping Haydn at the fences, but the latter had more pace on the flat. Hali a mile from home Haydn left his opponent, who was being ridden before the straight was reached. Haydn, jumped the hen-coop three lengths clear, and, finishing up well, won fairly easily by a. coup!e of lengths. Haydn is probably as well as ever he was. and, with full penalty, has a chance in. the Grand National. Seaman won the "Winter Oats very easily at the end, and must have considerably improved on his first day's running. He apnears to hold the horses he met here safe in the Winter Cup. Another double winner was Jolly Friar, who was alto improved by tha gallop on Jxe first day. He must also have a chance in the Winter Cup, in which, he ran second last year. De Witte made hia only appearance at the meeting in the race won. by Jolly Friar. He -was favourite, but could only finish fourth. William won the Crofton Hack Handicap comfortably at the end. Aotea, also belonging to the Poriroa stable, was a hot pot for toe Kia Ora Hack Handicap, but could only get third to Clem {bj;

St. Clements). Mr Douglas started both Waipu and St. Albert in the Hack Hurdles. W. Young, who returned from Australia this ~ week, made his reappeairance n tke lastnamed, and won from end to end. After toiling in the rear for h& first half of the race, Southern Cross finished in third place. Lardlock, a Grand National candidate, wae included in the field, and finished absolutely last. S>t. Albert -war allowed to drop out of the Biccaxton race, in which both Top Rose and Southern Cross was still engaged. Thie Audelander •Ca'tchem .showed up well for a mile, bxct failed to see it out. Ben Jonson won the Final Hurdles from end to end. Le Beau -gave « very load exhibition of jumping. Pushful gdt within » couple of lengths of Ben Jonson two furlongs from home, but dropped back again and finished fourth. Mendwai and Cwalry were galloping on at the -end, -when most of the others were run out, /.but -too late to make any impression m Ben Jonson, who was a good favourite. July 29.
