GREYMOUTH NEWS NOTES.
(Fbou Oub Own Correspondent.) GREYMOUTH, July 26. At Blackwater a gale blew with great force. The ladder of the Blackwater dredge was overturned, and the work of restoring it is not yet completed, so that operations have been compulsorily suspended for the week. Messrs Dcnnehy Bros., flaxmillere, of Barrytown, had the misfortune to lose a la-rge area of flax on Sunday. It appears that the firm had a large area of land cleared, and, taking advantage of the strong wind on Saturday, decided on a burn. During the night a gale sprang up, and carried the fire to the ia-rge area of flax, wfliich waa destroyed. This loss is a eerious one, as it will throw a number of men out of employment during the season. Fifty trucks, containing 600,000 ft of timber, came down the Otira line yesterday for shipment. This constitutes a record for one day. It is expected that a. similar quantity will be brought down to-morrow. To-day the Phoenix Syndicate (late Ulster) started crushing. The manager (Mr Rodden), who has left the Inglewood mine, which has been closed down, is in charge. Experienced miners are of. the opinion that the Phoenix crushing will yield a satisfac tory result. The erection of the second telegraph l>ne between Westport and Reefton will be completed in about six weeks. A metallic circuit is being installed, and when the work is completed there will be telephonic communication between Westport and Reelton and Greymouth. Mr Albert Nees has bought the Hauhau dredge for £260, and Mr Cederman the Maori King machinery at £60.
"Why have you not brought this action into court before?" asked the judee, addressing the plaintiff in the Frome (Somersetshire) County Court. " Because I wm ' afraid to do «o, as I have been threatened with witchcraft," answered the plaintiff.
