PUKEIRI JUNCTION.

July 27.—Tbe drought is still with us. A welcome shower fell yesterday, but many such are needed to produce much effect upon the land and thry fields. Feed is n.ow at starvation prices, and farmers have had in some cases ta obtain supplies of turnips from the south. Unfortunately for some the railway concession to carry food free came just after ~arge supplies had come to- hand. In most fields, feed is- absolutely non-existent, and it has been said that even a starving mouse might be seen all the way while crossing from one side of a field to the other. The outlook is indeed serious, and unless ram falls soon crops must fail completely next season. Social —Notwithstanding the foregoing, troubles would seem to sit lightly upon our people. We go on marrying, dancing, etc., just as usual. "Let us feast and be merry, for to-morrow w« die.' Happy indeed' «ie they who ?a» always see a silver lining to the darkest cloud, for 'tis certain troubles were never lightened by worrying about them. Sunday School.—When ifc became known, that Miss A. Goodall, who hars for some time acted as superintendent of the local Sunday school, was about to bo- married, it was felt that her services should be acknowledged in some way. The scholars took the matter in hand, with the result that she received frcm them- a solid silver fern bowl suitably inscribed. Church Social.—Mias Goodall has likewise, acted for some years as organist in the Presbyterian, Church, and at a social given , on her behalf the Rev. J. Steven presented . her with a silver salver «md biscuit box, j suitably inscribed. Mr J. Doig replied on her behalf, thanking the people sincerely for their handaome gifts. Marriage Bells.—On the 17th inst. Miss Alice Dennison and Mr Alty, of Pareora, were united in the bonds of holy matrimony, and on the following day Miss A. Goodall and; Mr J- -Doig, of Papekaio, were similarly united by the Rev. J. Steven. Both ceremonies took place in th« homes of the brides' parents at Hilderfchorpe. On the 24th the marriage of Miss Wilson and Mr A. Gray took place at Papakaio;. Needless to say. these events caused no little star in, , our community. In each case; th« happy I couples received numerous gifts, and axe settling into life with the best wishes of hosts, of friends. Bacelors' Boll.—On the- 17th; th« local bachelors gave a balL which proved, a great success, about 60 couples beitjf present. The ' hall was nicely decorated for ttto occasion. The catering mas in the capable hands of Mrs Hurst, and excellent music waa supplied by Mr H. Brown, of Qamaru.
