CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the council of the Chamber of Commerce was held on the 24th instant. Present: Messrs -J. W. Henton (president), G. R. Ritchie, J. M. Gallaway, D. M'Ph-erson, W. Gow, and the Hon. T. Fergus. The Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward wrote conveying his deep appreciation of the chamber's congratulations on the manner in which he had represented New Zealand at the recent Imperial Conference, and thanking it, for its hearty welcome on his return to this colony. A considerable amount of correspondence was received from Chambers of Commerce regarding the matters of tariff reform and the amendment of the Bankruptcy Act; also letters from the Minister of Trades and Customs/ and the Minister of Justice, stating that any communication from the Chamber of Commerce would receive careful consideration. It was resolved to write to the Prime Minister suggesting that delegates of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of London, who proposed to visit Australia next year, should be invited to extend their visit to New Zealand. Correspondence was also reecived with reference to bank holidays, particularly in connection with the Public Bank Holidays Bill, now before the House. It was resolved to address the Prime Minister, reminding him of the objection which, the chamber had repeatedly urged against the observance of saints' days as bank holidays. The Traffic Superintendent, Railway Department, . Dunedin, wrote with, reference to " the request that a night goods train should be run to Invercargill, explaining the present arrangements in detail, and stating that as he considered the present service quite sufficient to meet the business, he was unable to recommend any alteration. It Was resolved to writ*- to Mr Robert Glendining expressing the chamber's warm appreciation of his generous action in presenting the Winter Gardens to the City of Dunedin.
