SHIPPING DISASTER
LONDON, July 23. Reuter's San Francisco correspondent states- that a small steamer named the San Pedro, laden with lumber, collided at midnight on' Saturday off Eureka in a heavy fog with the steamer Columbia, of 2700 tons, which was carrying numerous . San Francisco passengers. J The San Pedro struck the Columbia on the port bow, tearing an immense hole in her. The -passengers on the Columbia hurried on deck, where a scene of wild panic en-sued. j The Columbia sank in five minutes. '; A life-raft which was launched saved a few persons, and eight people were saved by clinging to the San Pedro. Lloyd's states that 100 people were drowned, and that 200 were 6aved by a passing 6teamer. Other accounts give the number lost as 150, including the captain of the Columbia. One story states that every woman perished. SAX FRANCISCO, July 23. One hundred and forty-four of the Columbia's survivors have arrived at ] Eureka. The total casualties are esti- ' mated at 69.-
