ERUPTION IN THE PACIFIC
SYDNEY, July 23. News from the Islands reports that a volcanic disturbance was located to the «outh-west of the island of Navua in the sea some miles from shore. The Premier of Tonga, who visited the •pot, states that there appear to be vents not far from each other. There was a rushing, booming sound, and a column of •moke and steam mixed with black pumice was thrown in the air with a tremendous noise. The column was close on a hundred feet high. The vents were playing altersately, and should the outbreak continue tlie formation of a new island is pre- , dieted.
