SOUTHLAND WINTER SHOW.

IFbox Otrm Own ComaispoirDEHT.) INVERCARGILL, June 11. The annual winter show of the Southland Metropolitan A. and P. Association was commenced to-day. The weather was somewhat unfavourable, ' being dull, with occasional showers. The show is being held in the Zealandia and Adder s Hall, the latter being used P™"*!*"* (? r da>ry produce. The Major (Mr W. B. bcandrett), in declaring the show open, referred to the magnificent display of produce, which fully proved the exceUent productive qualities of Southland soil. The total number of exhibits this year constitutes » record, beinjj 780, as against last years 755 Bacon and poultry contributed <<s entries, cheese 54, butter 82, preserves, fruite, etc., 5, bread, cakes, etc., I*s, fruit 20, potatoes 90, turnips, etc., Zii, grain 65, seeds 20. The arrangements were carried out in a very efficient manner. Taken aa a whole the show is a decided improvement on last year's. The display of Apples was exceedingly good, being the Sneet exhibit yet seen here, while the potatoes and roots were also of a very Wh order. A feature of the show was the- artistic designs in the fancy butter etas, the exhibit of Miss May Winton being much admired. The general quality of the cheese exhibits was very gratifying. The uniformity of quality, as evidenced by the points for flavour, body, texture, and colour, is fully maintained this year, and is quite up to the high standard of excellence characteristic of the Southland factories.
