THE EDUCATION QUESTION,
AN IMPORTANT APPEAL.
J _ LONDON, October 15. It was officially announced to-day that the Government had decided to appeal against the judgment given in the recent West Riding case, in which it was decided ' that public money could not be paid where religious instruction was given in schools. The Government is taking this course with a view of clearing: up numerous points of difficulty at the earliest moment. Mr Asquith (Chancellor of the Exchequer), in addressing his constituents, said that whether or not there was an " appeal or whether or not the appeal was successful, nothing could modify the Government's intention to give legislative effect to the first principle of the Education Bill — viz., that public control must be absolutely unfettered and complete from top to bottom of all the education given at the public charge in English elementary schools.
At a great meeting of Catholics at Manchester it was resolved, to resist the Education Bill to the utmost, as it was held to bo destructive of religious equality.
