ALLEGED CUSTOMS FRAUD
ADELAIDE, October 9.
The heaving of the charge of conspiracy against Tucker in connection with thi alleged Customs frauds has commenced. Sir John Downer, outlining the case for the prosecution, stated that the frauds had been carried out by means of Customs stamps obtained by falsely representing to the Customs officer that they had been lost and wanted replacing. During the progress of the frauds Martin and Co. had paid £59,000 into the account of Tucker, as their authorised agent, whereof £31,000 had not reached the Customs Department.
October 10.
During the hearing of the charge of conspiracy against Tucker in connection witk the alleged Customs frauds the Commonwealth Crown Solicitor stated that he had had a conversation with Tucker, and the latter had said that Forwood had run his agency business for 13 years and that he gave signed blank cheques to Forwood, who filled them in.
