Eight Day.

Tho success of this year's competitions was fully maintained on Wednesday. Despite all holiday attractions, there was a good attendance in the afternoon, and the house at night was again such as must have have made glad the heart of the committee. Mr T. W. Whitson presided. Details of Wednesday's proceedings arc a« fallow; —

RECITATION (gentlemen, amateurs), "Lady Clara Vero de Vere." First prize, £2 2s; second prize, 10s 6d. Mr S. H. Oafcorne (Dunedin) and Mr J. D. Clark (Dunedin), 138 points (equal) .. 1 Mr A. D. Aitken (Dunedin), 135 points .. 2 Others competing were: — Mr Herbert Lloyd Young (Ros.yn), Mr Thomas Gallagher (Ifenedin), Mr Peter Scott (Dunedin), Mr J. Hamilton-Sinclair (Portobello), Mr A. C. Toshach (Waikiwi). The judge said that, exception being made of the- three placed competitors, this recitation had not been a particularly happy one. In marks tihe two competitors bracketed first were exactly equal. Oce gained marks for delicacy of hand, ing and finesse, and the other gained marks for that subtle quality known as personality. Armstrong (Christchurch), " A Country Clergyman's Notices, 158 points 1 Mr P. Scott (Dunedin), Sandy M'Glashan's Courtship,"' 139 points .. 2 Mr J. D. Clarke, " The Roman Guide," 125 points 3 Others competing last night:— Mr F. V. Blandford (Dunedin), " The Great Calamity ; Mr A. Douglas Aitken (Dunedin), 'The Liverwing Testimonial " ; M-r J. H. Sinclair (Portobello) " The Laddie Finds His Whitt.e " ; Mr A. C. Toshach (Waikiwi), " The Mounted Foot Brigade." Mr Baeyertz said Mr Armstrong merited first place on account of his splendid imperturbability and the way he resisted temptation to burlesque. Mr Scott recited with a keen appreciation of tho humour cf the piece, and fine characterisation. Mr Clark's Italian accent was rather French, and the American drawl would have been an improvement. B'andford (Dunedin), "O are yo sleepin', Maggie?" - Mr Barnett said the committee would da well to get another critic for Scotch songs. He had moved among Scotch people now for 10 years, but had not learned the language. He could not stand the bagpipes, and perhaps was not qualified to judge Scottish music. BASS SOLO, "The curfew.'
