THE HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. WELLINGTON, August, 6.

The Department of Industries and Commerce received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, August 4: — There is a good demand for all iamb. Competition amongst holders to clear stock* has lowered values slightiy. The average price is : Canterbury brands, 4Jd ; other than Canterbury, 4Jd. The mutton market is dull and weak. L.ght-weight Canterbury brands are scarce, and are quoted at 3Jd. Heavyweights are selling at 3|d. The average price for best quality North Island mutton ia 3--1 and second class quaiity is quoted at BJd. The beef market is steady at the last -quotations. The butter market is firm, with «m upward tendency. Choice New Zealand brantie, which are scarce, are quoted at 108s per cwt. Danish is quoted at 115s, Irish at 107s, and Canadian at 105s per cwt. Th© -cneese market is steady. New Zealand stocks are exhausted, and Canadian makes are selling at 58s per owt. The hemp market is <}ui«t, and small business is being done at about the same prices as cabled .ast week. There is scarcely any demand for cocksfoot seed. Bright, clean, dressed 17lb New Zealand seed is quoted nominally at 46s per cwt. Shipments from the River Plate during the month of July, 1906, were as follow:—Mutton Liverpool, 143,203 carcases; Hull, 10,873; Newcastle, 10,013; Southampton, 3364; Car■diff, 13,137; London, 131,935;— t0tal carcases, 323(515 Lamb — Liverpool, 3200 carcases; Hull, 1135; Cardiff, 1879; Southampton, 293; Xiondon, 13,607 ;— total carcases. 19,114. The average price for River Plate mutton is sid. Lamb from the- same country is quoted at Aid.
