A recent nvessagc fro-n Wellington stated that it was the intention of the Government to amenrj the Slaughtering and Inspection Act so as to provide for the slaughtering of pigs at abattoirs. This matter wu discussed by th« Agricultural and Pastoral Association to-day. Mr R. Hall (president) said this was an important, matter for farmers, who were not allowed to kill pigs on their f*rms. No doubt th« department was right in protecting the pul>He against diseased moat; "till, thereehouhl bo no needless restrictions placed on farmer*. The secretary said ho had 6eei« Mr Ritchie. Secretary for Agriculture, who said that flux were loft in pig carcase the meat could bo properly inspected for disease. Mr Walters 6aid the proposal would kill th«» pork industry, and he did not believe that there was much disease amongst nips in Auckland. It »va« resolved to express the opinion thaf some method of inspecting pigs ehould be devised whereby, while fully protecting the public, provision would be mad© enabling farmers to continue killing a limited number of pigs on their farms per week. A communication asking the opinion oB the agricultural community on tho proposed! importation of Australian and Chinese quail was received by the Agricultural and Paatoral Association at its meeting to-day.. The president said weasels and sparrows and other pe«ts had been imported, and the farmers had to feed them in various ways. Agriculturists should protest against suofa further importation, for quail were of tlo ' use.- Mr R. Dick said farmers might, torgi/e a pheasant or two, but quail wore not fit for shooting, and the country was now overrun by quail. It wiw resolved tb*fc i©
