THE OAMARU MEETING.

One would have to travel back many years to find such a collection of horses engaged at Oamaru as those which have had engagements claimed for them at next week's gathering in the White City. Many good horses have run at Oamaru in bygone years, but it is safe to assart that never previously has such a combination of quality and quantity bsen found on a nomination list for a meeting to be held in that part of the world. In the light of his receut form it was not difficult to locate what the top-weight would be in the Oamaru Cup, and Makaroff reads nicely treated with 9.5, although he will probabls* have to meet foemen more worthy of his steel than he defeated at either Oamaru or Christchurch. Still he won both his races at Ashburton in splendid style, and has naturally had to pay for it in the way of handicapping. Makaroff had 7.2 in the Great Autumn, and as compared with that race the son of Arline now meets Delaware on 201b, Starshoot on 231b, Convoy on 241b, Savoury on 311b, Clanchattan on 231b, Beau Seaton on 211b, and Apollcdoris on 231b worre terms over four furlongs less ground. For his win at Christchurch he now meets Beau Seaton on 221b, Tirole on 271b, Convoy on 301b, Terrapin on 281b, and Czarevna on 301b, and Tsitsibar on 18lb worse terms over a couple of furlongs les3 ground. Makaroff met and defeated Convoy and Czarevna at Ashburton over a mile, and now meets them on 71b and 81b worse terms. Of the others engaged in the race, Red Gauntlet looks nicely placed, and fit and well would be a difficult horse to beat with 8.1 on his back ; whilst others whose chances appeal to the writer are Terrapin, Chryseis, and Apollodoris ; and to name a quartet out of the 21 engaged, a preference is shown for Makaroff, Red Gauntlet, Terrapin, and Chryseis. In the Tokarahi Handicap, a trio of brilliant sprinters in Master Alix, Chivalry, and Petrovna head the list, and the two latter may prove the hardest horses to beat in the race, whilst Apollodoris may prove the best of the others. Acceptances close on Thursday, 17th, and a more definite selection as to probable winners will appear before the meeting.
