CAVE (Canterbury).

May 12.— The weather ha 3 been fairly good this last three weeks, and all the odd bits of grain have been got together, and the most of the threshing has been got through ; but there is some to do yet on the Motukaikai Station. One of the mills, while going to some of the new settlers places on the Rosewill settlement, got bogged in a new road, so they had to turn and go back and leave the crop till dry weathercomes to make the newly-formed road hard 1 enough to bear the weight of the engine and mill. A Narrow Escape. — Messrs Hopkinson "Bros., ■when threshing Mt M. Coghlan's crop on th« Pareora Downs, near the Cave, had a. bit o-V « scare. While the combine was- being lopefi, by stages up a very steep hill the engine moor-*, ings gave way, and the engine set off down hill "on its own." The steam power being cu\ off from the driving wheels to work the winch* the driver could make no use of it. Mr VvHopkinsou tried to push in the connecting pin but was knocked down and nearly run ove'JHis brother Daniel stuck to his post, ar« inanased to steer the engiue so as to turn i

ap hill, and bring it to » standstill. No harm fras done ; but it was a narrow escape. " Land Sales. — Mr Aimer Raftray has sold his Station, at the head of the Motukaikai Eiver, to Mt Clark, of Christchurch, and the new owner takes possession in a short time. Mr Battray will be missed, as he always helped on any object for the good of the district, and when any one went to him for help for any public object, he always gave readily towaids ft without a grumble. , County Affairs. — We have had an election of county councillors for Albury and the new riding, the Cave. Mr Tasroan Smith was the only candidate nominated for the Cave Riding, and thus had a, walk-over. Mr W. Werford, pur former member, declined to stand. He Jias been a county councillor for about 10 years, and has done^ood work for the Cave district afar as getting roads is concerned. During time he got the back-blocks settlers a good froad from th« Cannington bridge to the Cave, at » cost of something like £1200, which had to come out of the three counties — the- Levels, .Waimate, and the M'Kenzie County. He battled \rell for the end of the county. He was returned for and he was chief mover in getting H riding for the Cave enc[ of the M'Kenzie County.
