ALLANTON.
May 14. — Owing to the exceptionally wet season farmers in the vicinity are only in the middle of their harvesting operations, and in some cases the crops are still standing. At present mills are working at Messrs Bathgale, Lee's, and Christie's, and in two cases mill owners have just commenced threshing this week. Some of the " early birds" have already got their ploughs going in the hope of being favoured with better weather for the ensuing season, one farmer. I notice, having practically half of his ploughing done. Potatoes rule at a very high price, owing also, I presume, to the wet season and blight combined. Tha local storekeepers cannot supply thorn at the rate of 81b for Is.
Social. — A Cards and Draughts Club ha 9 been formed under the auspices of the Hall Committee, whereby the j-oung men of the district meet twice a week and pass a few hours in each other's company playing cards and other games during the winter evenings. So far the club has been largely patronised, and it is Mitended in the near future to hold a match with some of the neighbouring club 3 in the district.
Accident.— A slieht accident happened our stationmaster, Mr Morgan, last week, which resulted in his being off duty for a week. I tinderstand. however, that he is practically well again, and will be abe to resume duties this week. In the meantime hia place is taken by Mr Wilson.
