N.Z FARMERS UNION

OTAGO.

The annual meeting of the Tetua branch was held on the 9th inst., when there was a satisfactory attendance. The report showed that the branch had not received 1 the support it deserved, only a small proportion of these who ought to have been in the ranks having been actual members. The balance sheet showed a credit of 11s 6.-1. Lfrttors from the provincial secretary containing remits and suggestions and enclosing pamphlets for distribution .vere read. The remits and suggestions provoked" considerable discussion, and the meeting showed that it was fully alive to its interests. On the question of subscriptions, which was the subject of a xemit, there wrs an animated debate, several suggestions being thiown out. Finally a motion wa9 carried in favour of graduated subscriptions based on Government valuations, many contending that were tho subscriptions lower, many of (he small farmers would be brought into the union. Mr B. C. Horrell was appointed chairman, Mr B* Richards secretary and treasurer, re-elected.' and Mr Robertson, sen., was re-electedl auditor. A meeting of ths Otautau branch was held on the 11th inst., when tho following ofßce-fcearers were elected for the ensuing year:— President, Mr Buick; vice-president, Mr M'Eenzie; secretary, Mr N. A. M'Larcn fall re-elected). Mr William Lindsaj" and the president were appointed delegates to the general conference, to be held! in Invercargillon May 25.--Mr A. M. Paterson. V.S., gave one of his interesting and; instructive lectujve to farmers. Although* on a question of vital importance to all farmers and horse owners — the subject bein£ lameness in horses— the lecture was very poorly attended, and it must be extremely disrour-\«in?:-to both Mr Paterson and the local branch of the Farmers' Union that the residents and surrounding farmers are so dilatory in attending a lecture of this description. Mr Paterson not only gives a remedy for the various unsoundnesses in. horses, but also the cause and prevention. Ho also showed some very interesting diagrams illustrating his lectures, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks at tre. conclusion of his lecture.
