DUNEDIN D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.
Motto : " Union is strength.''
Dear Dot, — The ordinary weekly meeting of the club wa3 held on Tuesday, April 17. Awkward Ned occupied the chair, and there were 21 members present, including Go Hoc, Tomahawk, lea, Gullyite, and Emerald (members of committee), and several visitors. The latter w«re welcomed, on behalf of the^ club, by the chairman. Owing to a slight * oversight, no leaders had been chosen for debate, and so we had to 'depend on impromptu efforts'. The subject was, "Should Foreigners be Excluded from New Zealand?", Very little enthusiasm vr&s exhibited, only four club members taking part. The efforts of these were augmented by papers sent m by three country correspondents. Tomahawk opened battle for the affirmative side, and was supported by A Mother's Lass and Vaizaleen ; while Ned; taking the negative, found his helpers in Venetia Corona, Gullyite, anr Emerald. -The -judging was tleft in the hands of the members, several of- whom showed a great disinclination to vote, and resulted in the negative eide carrying off the honours by the narrow margin of two votes. Two papers left from last open meeting weTe read — these being "Music" (Anthea), and "Old Maids" (One Who Doesn't Want to be"~a Deadhead). The Chairman announced that photos of the Milton picnic had arrived from Lester, and that these were procurable on payment of one shilling. The Chairman then declared the club closed. , A meeting of the epinmittee was held immediately after, at which all the above-named committee members were present. The syllabus for the ensuing month was arranged as follows:—May 1, Debate, "Should the Youth of To-day be 'Allowed "to Choose Their Own Professions?" May 8, Special Subject Evening. May 15, Reading -at sight and criticisms theTeon. May 22, debate, "Is Character Influenced by Surroundings?" itay 29, open meeting. Country correspondents are, as usual, cordially, invited to send in papers for any of these meetings. A meeting of the Social Committee was held after that of the club committee.— Yours . truly," EMERALD, Hon. Secretary.
