SOUTHLAND BOWLING NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

IXVERCARGILL, April 23. The local bowling clubs held an informal tournament on a small scale during the Easter holidays. Forty players turned up at the Southland Green on Good Friday morning, and after Me=srs R. Wesney and Ham, the presidents of the two clubs, had arranged them in rinks play was begun about 9.45. The 10 rinks were divided' into two sections, so that each rink had four erames to play. The last of these games was finished about half-past 5, when it was found that J. H. Loudon's rink had won one section and J. Lock the other. These then played off, the first prize going to the latter. Players were kept strictly up to time, and things went along merrily, everyone enjoying the day's play. Saturday was devoted to doubles, but not many players turned up to take pars ur.tii ihe afternoon, and even then there were only about two dozen on the green. On Easter Monday the weather was again beautifully fine, and those taking part in the local tournament were fesling anything but pleased with themselves for having altered tho date of the big meeting. About 50 players assembled on the green, among them being Mr* Thomson, vice-president Kai-« tuna Green, with his clubinate Captain Sundstrom, and Mr Duncan, of the Kaitangata Club. Play was carried on .all day along the same lines as on Friday. M'Natty's rink played a capital game, the Bkip himself being in splendid form— as also was his third player, J. Howie, — and won the A section. J. England and It. Wesney tied in the other section, the play-off resulting in favour of the former. Tho removal of the tournament from Easter to Christmas has had a bad effect on the game. There are not enough clubs round about to keep the interest going, and hitherto the ulayers have always had

tho Easter tournament to fix their eyes on , and to stimulate their enthusiasm. This year, .without anything particular ahead' of them, the play has been of a decidedly uninteresting nature, and it has been suggested by a very large number that the old dato should be reverted to. The North End Green is looking splendid just now, the seed sown in extra liberal quanties having come away beautifully. It is confidently anticipated that this club will soon be at the end of its troubles. During the afternoon a couple of interclub matches were played, in which members of Dunedin clubs and bowlers of - Oamaru took part, the following being the players and scores : — Dunedin v. Phoenix.
