LAKE COUNTY.

April 21. — During- Easter this was all that oouid bz desired, anc} continued co until Thursday, when the weather was warm and pleasant, but the sky overcast, predicting a change. The change came on Friday, when a continuous and warm rain fell heavily all day, melting the snow on the mountains, and putting all the rivers in flood. At the Head of Lake the Rees and Dart Rivers were m high flood, and were scon impassable. The Shotover River rose rapidly, aud though the mail conch crossed on Friday afternoon, it was by evening of ths same day running bank and bank at Lower Shotover, <tnd quite impassable. In consequence the. mail at. night from Queenstown to Arrow waa taken via Arthur's Point. Today, however, the river has fallen considerably owing to a cold high wind, and the Shotover was passable again. "Wedding Bells.— Ou Tuesday last, at St. Josepirs Church. Queenstown, Miss Kate ikekie, second daughter of Mr T. Luckie, of Queenstown, was married, to Mr Angus M'Lean, cf Half-way Bush, by the Rev. J. 3?. O'Donnell. "Miss- Annie Luekie acted as bridesmaid to -her sister, while Mr Alex. M.'l»eair -icted as best man. The wedding -march was nlayed by Miss Gudgeon, organist at 'St. Joseph's. The newly-wedded coup.c, who are well known in this district, carry /v/iSh them the good wishes of a number of friends. Opening at Criffal. — On Easter Mocday ihe formal opening of the Criffel Lead Company's- property at Cardrona. tcok place, when there were' present the secretary, Mr Edward Trythall, and Mt Louis Card, one of the directors. The local director, Mr M'Dougall, and a nunibar of other local paople, were present at the function. Work is being carried on in earnest now, there being three shifts going. New Zealand Exhibition. — Messrs Scandrelt and Allen, of Invercargill, paid a brief visit to this district recently for the purpose o£ forming local committees to arrange that grain und othei products should be coll«cte<J and forwarded to the Exhibition. So far as concerns grain and any other products which come -within the rangt of the agricultural department, I think the committees will find themselves relieved of all responsibility, fc. I believe that the stock inspector of the district has already arranged for forwarding these. They should, from all reports, be quite equal to anything from other parts of New Zealand. Mayoral Elections. — For the Borough of Arrowtown. the- retiring_ Mayor, Mr Henry M'Kibbin, was elected without opposition for Bis second term of office. For the Borough of Qseenstown Mr Maurice Gavin, whtf has served for many- years with credit •as "a councillor, has been elected without opposition. 'As a councillor Mr Gavin has shown himself keenly interested in the welfare of the town" and well grounded in the knowledge of borough government. Unprovoked Rowdyism. — A discreditable affair, resulting- in' injury to some of the property of ihe Lower Shotovor Hotel, owned by/Mi Wicks, teak place during the week. Twt> youths, from apparently nothing but a spirit of mischief, were tha cause of the trouble-i-wbich trouble I believe the courts will be called upon to deal with. Rifle-shco ting.— The W.M.R. held the final match, on Easter Monday, for the Hallenstein clock, when fine weather prevailed. The shooting took place on the Arrow E*ngo, and although the average shooting was good, no one managed to pass 87. It was thought that, under the conditions, 90 odd might be recorded. Private Jenkins topped the score with 87. and became the •winner of the clock. His score in the matches is au aggregate of 267, while Privates W. Selby and J. Allan were second, -with £66. These points show gooS, consistent firing.

Obituary. — The sad news of the death of • Mr Dan Atfpinall has been received during the week. Deceased had been a sufferer for some years, so that his end was not altogether unexpected. Deceased was well known in Upper Shotover, where, prior to failing health, he followed gold mining, a pursuit very successfully carried on by his father before him. Deceased passed away at the lome of his mother, Maori Hill, Dunedin. — Another sad death is recorded: that of Mr Peter White, second son of Mi George White, of Lake Hayes, a well-known resident. 'Deceased succumbed at Waihi after a brief attack of erysipelas. Owing lo his having spe^t the greater part of his life here, and to tho fact that deceased was of a manly and generous nature, sympathy for his parents in their loss is widespread.
