EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.

The quarterly returns of attendance for tho period ended September 30, 1905, which have been compiled by the acting-sccvetary of the Otago Education Board, show that there wore 222 schools in operation in this district, employing 203 male and 321 female teachers Tho number of pupils on tho rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 19 195, and at tbo end of the quarter 19,328, comprising 9955 boys and 9373 "iris The averatre attendance was 9026 boys and 8324 girls "making a total of 17,350, being 190 less than the total" for the previous quarter and 185 more than that for tho September quarter, 1904. The number of the pupils admitted during the quarter was 904- boys and 797 girls,— total, 1701. -The averages at the city and suburban schools for the quarter were : — Kaikorai, 651; Albany Street, 603; Forbury, 561; Gcoro-e Street, 558; Caversham, 516; High Street, 502; Arthur Street. 492; Union Street, 491; North East Valley, 451; Normal 428; Mornington, 412; Macandrew Road 402; Kensington, 249; Ravensbourne, 161; St. Clair, 132; Andersons Bay, 122 ; Wa-kari, 82 ; lieith Valley, 42. The averages at Oamaru were: — South School 320; NortLi, 311; Middle, 262. At the District High Schools: Port Chalmers, 401 ; Balclutha, 292 ; Lawrence, 260 ; • Mosgiel 255; Tokomairiro, 224; Palmerston, 210; Naseby, 154; Tapanui, 150; Hampden, 112.
