ON THE CLIFFS.

By E. S. L. P.

League upon league of l>lue water, white crested, dancing, sparkling in the sunlight. Below thoaa high rocks the beauty is all gone — dork ,green, weird, awesome, in one solid mass, with a scarce perceptible motion.

Ugh! It was a monster, cruel, relentless, ever drawing its hapless victim to destruction. Now it is a fiend, derisively, laughing ond mocking its innocent prey. Nay, it's ar. evil spirit, fascinating, alluring with its terrible magnetic power. A seagull flitted across the sririace of .the waves, exultingly defying that horrible mass ; the sun gleamed on its white breast j — Innocence and Evil ; ever it flitted fear- • lessly, dipping its beak down upon the moiister, ever rising triumphantly from out its grip, never pausing, skirmishing lightly along, exulting in its noble freedom, in its dominion over land and' sea, end ever that cruel monster rose and fell, with its hideous, noiseless swell, drawing, fascinating, alluring.

A shag sat perched overhead, a silcnc sentinel of woe. Nay, a dark evil spirit, watching the power of a greater one. Long ha sat, never moving from that- .one position. Did he, too, feel the. awful pow^r acd rejoice in his oneness with the m.?smeric mass, or was he some grim-visaged spirit sent from other worlds to pass Jiis days in penance at the shrine of a monster?

The seagull has flown far, far away, the sun-gleams leave the waters, a wind lises, and ever the dirge of the wind and tho moan of the waves intermingle, and ever that hideous serpent rises and falls.
