THE FOOTBALL FATUITY.
DEATH OF W. BAILEY. W. Bailey, the Otago playe,r who was injured in .the match Otago v. Southland, played on the Caledomian Ground on Salur. day, died in the Dunedin Hospital at 8.20 p.m. on the 29th. From iho tune of his admission into the institution only silght hopes of his recovery were entertained. Up to Tuesday morning the unfortunate young player was in a more or less semi-conscious condition, but from that time up to the hour of his death he gradually sank, and died ac above stated. Bailey's age is stated to be something betwe-en 24 and 26 years. His another is dead, and his father arrived in Dunodin from the south on Tuesday. The present is the first season during which Bailey played as a s&nior for the Southern Club, but last year he secured junior representative honours, playing for the same •club. In senior representative football this season he has played in the Manawatu v. Otago ja-nd Otago v. Southland matches. Aa a footballer he was very popular, and particularly so on the Flat. He was. for some time a member of fche> Salvation Army, and is generally spoken of as a good-living young man. For a number of years he was employed by Mr Eueeell, coal merchant, on the Flat, with whom he and his two sisters Tived. Very general regret js expressed throughout tho city that the accident occurred, and this regret will be accentuated by the information now published of its ifatal termination. A circumstance that adds to the sadness of the. occurrence is that Bailey was Bhortly to have been married.
