THE FAMINE IN SPAIN.
MADRID, August 15. Thei'e are lOu.ooo destitute labourers in Andalusia. Gieat efforts are being made in the way of public charity to cope with the distress. August 1&. Famine and starvation are general throughout Andalusia. The children are eating fir cones and wild cactus. There is intense indignation, as well as many signs of revolt, at the Government's inaction. Fifteen thousand labourers are roving the country, many of them being armed with rifles. August 17. The Government has ordered the authorities in Andalusia to open soup kitchens, and has asked the directors of railways to repair their lines in order to employ as many men as possible. The Minister of Agriculture declares that, there are 200,000 workers idle, and that a million and a-half sterling will not ba sufficient to afford relief.
