LAND OFFICE SCANDALS.

SYDNEY, August 15. A witness -before the Land Ccmmissioa said that he had paid £900 to Peter Close, a member of a Sydney firm, to jog the memory of the department so as to expedite the gazetting of leases. Another witness said he paid Willis £250 whether he secured him a lease or not. He offered a present of a further £1250 if the lease were secured. "Willis got £1500. August The Land Commission has got On >i track of Willis's, safe at the safe deposit. Mrs Willis denied that she had the key, but she subsequently admitted that it was in Hoskins's possession. The latter was brought before the commission, and was compelled to hand the key over. The safe will be opened to-morrow. August 17. Willis's safe was not opened to-day, but the Crown took possession of Mrs Willis's box at the safe deposit.
