HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB.

''.flic Hawke'g Bay Jockey Club has been fortunate with the weather experienced for abs "winter meetings. On Wednesday last it Was fine, but cola. -The attendance -was satistactcij', and iiicluded visitors from Auckland, wanganui. and" .Wellington. . • Several promiitftt members cf tho- executive were massing Tom the stewaids-' stand. Six William Rus- • k\V an<l Messrs F. liogan aaid L. De PelicheJ, ire at 'present on -a vusit- to ""England. The ndifferent -health of- M* George Hunter detained him at Porangaliau. " The totalisator turnover for • the afternoon - (£6248) is £880 fcnere than lasi year, which result in very Satisfactory. Some -interesting racing was witr messed. The only eteeplechase event' on the 'afternoon's prograannie wag the first event V>n {he card. Last" year the list included two cro&s-country races -each 'day. In the close Beason th« public like* to see cross-country eients after a plethora -of flat races. In (Qrawing up a programme tie committee, in itrydng to please- its patrons, has_ also to 'Stake into consideration whether the events «re popular- with horse owners! The hunter fclass catered for last year, included' Nadador, ißhyl, and Sabreur, three performers good feDongh for open company. Six of the eight Jrunners .Tor -the June steeplechase -would have been better placed in hunter company. The field ' included Patupaearehe 6isii.dle), a half-sister to Morag. She wag trictcten by Mr P. JJfeagle, and showed a good ideal of pace, but took liberties with some of <th« fences. It is an unusual thing to see a gentleman ridei competing against pxofesnionals. Sc ?eial of the latter class travelled Ko- the looking for their living, and Btoad, on the ground. ' Lurcher is a bed ier.c^r,»*nd, as at Wamganui, he madie. all Ms era running. 'He tired after going about' two miles, and Comfort, who held a good position throughout, had no difficulty in. beating the Taranaii-owned horse at the finish. jtEhis .vas Comfort's hrst appearance this winder, Last season he was one of Mr Lowry's ■Ellerslie team, and was successful in the Taranaki Steeplechase. The Quilt— Vista gelding, which was bred at Te Malrunga, is ■the. most promising of A. Goodwin's jumping team. Comfort had been schooled fry J. ©'Connelly and 'in co^nsea.uenc© that horssman was given the ride.' F. Lind, who us obtained to do Mr Lowry's riddng, was a spec- ' Hawke's -Bay Hurdles was a peculiarlyTun " race.' Cavalry led. for about threequarters o! a mile, dropped back last, and finished second.^ P. Johnston had the mount -oiv Trumpery, J. Cameron being a spectator. About six furlongs from- home, where Handptme Ptose tock the measure of Aroha, and Inspan, Tiump€Ty also moved up, and looked as if the pair wou-1,6; finish firsfc and second. Handsome Rose came on and finished by himself, but the grey mare failed *o stay it out, and was beaten by both Cavalry mnd Aioha, who is best suited by a miie 2nd threei-quarters journey. Handsome Rose <?£ a us«ful gelding, and is improving with the saeing he haa been doing. S*ibsequent run3iin» may maiko his performance jut to be not so good as it appeared. The Ladies' Bracelet has on few occasions gene outside the Hawke's Bay district. Mrs G- P. Donnelly, who nominated) Onhaoke, atangahake. Haea.ta, and Peaorlshot, has be«n ,the most successful nominator. That lady witnessed last week'*s race, although she had aio representative Tunning. Mrs J. Ormond jun.'s nomination Outei was made a- strong favourite. The cerise jacket was out an front •11 the way, and was only bea-ten in the laso fow -strides by St. Lyra, on whcxmi Mr Vivian ■was seen to advantage. Outer was ridden fov Mr Ormond, jun., who scored on two previous winners of the race— viz., St. Anthony »nd Hussar. After the race the band lined up in fiont of the grand stand to play the Winner in. and the ladies congregated on the eteps of the stand to have a look at the trophy and the successful nominator. Miss Connolly had not journeyed across from Wan•antii, and therefore the function dad not take ■place, to the disappointment of the fair sex. SlTg D. Scott, Mrs Jackson, and Mrs Jearvis <3-eor°e took the miich-coveted trophy to_ the West Coast in previous years. - Straight, jtfinerve' (Nelson— He&tia), and South Star jTsou'-wester— Stella) finished close-up to the. fckced division, Sleepwell being last. _ Captain Sha,nnoi> (T. Wilson) got r>, fly m jihe Scurry Hack, and never gave any of his •pponents * chance. By Tunning eecond B?oiitenoy shaped much Tj&tter than at Otaki »r Wanganui, and ii is evidently too soon to *«ite such a well-bied and gopd-looking colt

down a duffer. Matatokiri was nearly last at the turn, and finished third. The best of the. three was Baltic, which was galloping strong at the finish. Benmore (with O. Jenkins up) won the Winter Hack Handicap, one mile, in his best style. Among the also started division was Rosegrove, -which showed form not good enough for Lacks, nnich less a two-mil© handicap. [ The field engaged in the Hack Hurdles m- ! eluded; several beginners, the best of which wa.s Daredevil (Dreadnought— Spot), wno scored with something tc spare from Needlework. Bounce showed out for about a mile and a-half, but tired to nothing in the last half mile. _ „ Rose Madder won the Heretaunga Handicap from the start. The veteran Will o' the Wisp secured second place from Shrapnel, who -woukT have been better suited by a shorter distance. Steeplechase Day was gloriously fine — more like summer than, winter weather. The two best backed candidates in the Steeplechase shaped disappointingly. Jack o' Lantern had no difficulty in jumping the country, but appeared to find the. pace too solid, and finished last. Lurcher found the distance too iar, and tired, after -showing the way for about two miles. Pipi was called on in the last round, but was beaten off, when he came to grief at the first fence of the double, the last obstacle but one. Pipi has always been regarded as a good fencer, but deficient in pace. The Natator gelding is not on the improve, and has ,so far been, rather a. disappointment. After Lurche* gave way to Nadador Comfort' moved up to the latter, but Nadador drew away after clearing the double, and had the < race won before the brush fence in the straight-was reached. The winner carried the colours of Sir William Russell, and was heartily cheered on returning to scale. The buff and black colours have not been very fortunate in jumping" races. K. Gooseman lost the services of Evening a week before th& meeting, th« Wonderland mare having broken down badly. The Hastings trainer looked just as pleased after flic race as wher he led^ in Mr Aiinstrcng's mane at Wanganui. Jaclc Hall, who does the riding of jumpers owned by the Hon. ' J. D. Ormond and Sir William Russell, has won th« race two years in succession. The Hack Steeplechase included a half brothei and sister to Scallywag— viz., Mephusto (Lochnagar— Stella) and Natella (Natator— Stella). C. Mitchell, who used to ride Scallywag, scored a comfortable victory on Kohatu, which is by Scallywag's sire (Turquoise). Patupaearehe (Stephon— Swindle) tired away to nothing at -the finish. South Star (Sow'-wester — Stella) started in the Second Hack Hurdles, and came to grief at the first fence. Taura came to grief at the second obstacle, and Outer was not dangerous when she came to grief. Sleepwell ran up to her best form, and settled everything but Baltic, who had not previously started in a jumping race." The Crackshot gelding is strongly built, and may win a steeplechase later on. . Fontenoy .received most support of 14 runners in the June Hack Handicap, probably because C. Jenkins" had the mount. The good thing came off, but had/ to be kept going to shake off a. late run on the rails b> Benau. The . Gisborne-owned " Cinque (Saracen — Duadine) showed out fra about a mile in the Ladies' -Necklace. Captain. Shaamon was kept back until the turn was reached, when he. was let ou+. Here* P. Neagle sat down on Freeland, and, getting his mount in front, it apeared as if Mrs Mackersey's nomination would score. Captain Shannon had most left in him, and Mr Hyde had to use the whip to secure the verdict. Benefactor (Mrs F. Martin's nomination) secured third place. Wild Cat made a bold showing in the Turamoe Handicap, and was only collared at the last hurdle by Handsome Rose. Lind was riding Creusot hard at the finish, and the Torpedo gelding responded well, but could not xeach the leaders. Jenkins won the Final Handicap on Shrapnel from the barrier . rise. He held a good advantage at the turn, and secured the verdict without being called upon for a final effort. The false start, in the June Handicap was ■unfortunate foi the owners of Galahad, Hipporofla, Rosegrove, and Pearldiver. The chances of the horses named were extinguished by having to run the "distance twice. It was no fault of Mr Piper's that the incident happened. One end of the barriei went off ■when the starter was on the ground putting the horses in their places. The meeting was capably managed by Mr W. J. Stratton (secretary).
