LUMSDEN.

June 26.— A thaw set in about the middle of the wvek, and a soft wind and warm showers brought the snow off the hilltops, causing a heavy flood, but a frost setting in on Saturady night serious damage to low-lying country was averted.

Meetings— The Lunisden Public Eeadin" Boom Committee held a meeting on the 19th ' inst. to decide as to how the funds on hand should be disposed of. as the project in view by the promoters was not supported by the public sufficiently to warrant it" being gone on with. It was resolved at this meeting thai the amount on hand (something like dE34) should be handed over to the Public School Committee for the purpose of purchasing a piano for the school. A committee, with Mr Clark (head teacher) and Miss Thomson (mistressj associated with them, was appointed to select and purchase a, siiitable instrument, and it is expected that the board will subsidise the amount voted. This will give the staff and pupils the advantage of an up-to-date musical instrument for music tepching in the school. Land Sale.— Wednesday last was a red-letter day in Lunisden, the occasion being the sale of the last of the JSTew Zealand Agricultural Company's land in this locality. Every lot was keenly competed for, and all (with the exception of two or three ]ots) lirought considerably over the upset. Thia was set at a reasonable figure, so that at the advanced" prices the various lots are good value, and were well distributed among the town residents. This should remove any excuses for wandering stock being seen running at lar°-e on our streets. °

Football.— Phe local team journeyed to Gore last Wednesday to meet the Excelsior team A sturdiJy-contssted match was the result! Experts say that our boys had the best of the match throughout, though it ended in a dr 3 w ; neither side scoring. A return match wul be played at Lumsden some time before the season closes. I may here be permitted on behalf of the Lum&den citizens to offer a word of praise avd encouragement to our boys for their courage and gentlemanlj conduct at home and abroad on such occasions Improvements.— The alterations and improvements to the Presbyterian Church which have been m hand for some time, are now completed, and the heaters laid on, thus addin*greatly to the comfort of the preacher and congregation alike. This improvement is naucn appreciated during the winter services, mere should be no excuse now on the part ot the adherents for non-attenclance at morning and evening services, seeing that their comforts, bodily and spiritually, are so well looked after. Sunday School.— The Presbyterian Sunday School teachers and their friends gave an indoor picnic in the Public Hall oh Friday evening last. The night was wet and stormy yet a number of the children turned up with a fair sprinkling of adults. Appropriate games were indulged in, interspersed with hymns readings, and recitations. Action eon^s by the mites in charge of Miss Thomson delighted tile audience, and repetitions had to be given m many instances. The Eev. Mr Lymburn and Mr M Fetndge (superintendent) addressed those present, and tendered some kind counsel and advice to the little ones, the rev. gentleman particularly being in a happy strain. A bin dance of tea, cake, confectionery and fruit was provided by the parents and teachers. Voted of thanks to all friends who contributed to the success of the entertainmen+ veie passed, and a special vow of thanks to Mr Johnson, who kindiy gave the use of his piano free of charge. The singing of a hymn and the pronouncing of the benediction brought a very pleasant entertainment to a close at 10 p.m.
