WAIWERA.

May 29. — The threshing is Rretty -well finished for another season, and from what I can gather there -wiil not be nearly the quantity of grain sent out of the district that has gone in, some previous years ; there is, however, % larger quantity than usual being kept for chaff, which will in a measure make up for the. shortage of grain. Being so late- in. the season, it is remarkable the very fine weather we -have been favoured with fox some time past. This has 1 been particularly acceptable to those of us who were late in getting out threshing done. Most- of out fanners hay& again started ploughing, the- land being in capital order at present. Stock generally look well. I noticed a very fine line of wethers in Mi Copelaaid'a paddock on the Kuriwao Estate, nearly prime fat. I understand these sheep were nearly all fat when they were taken off the- tussock. So much for th& Kuxrwa© in its natural state. This must be very encouraging to the proprietor-, seeing that it- is only his second year down from Qmterbury. On this same «state may b© seen a splendid paddock of new grass and clover affer a heavy crop of oats had been taken off it. "Ehis is altogether very encouraging for Sj new settler, and from what I can gather Mr Copeland is perfectly satisfied with his property, which he is of opinion can still be much improved and mad© to carry much ■more stock even than at present. I shall deal with some big yields of gTa-in later <m. Sheep are still selling fairly well at our local sales* the- prices for wool being very encouraging. I have been informed that there is a good demand in tihe North Island for Ayrshire cattle. I hope our local breeder."? of thia favourite dairy breed will again reap a good harvest for their surplus stock. Obituary. — Another much-respected resident has passed SEway — namely, tihe late Mrs Powley, who died rather suddenly. Deceased was much respected by those who knew her, and she leaves a husband a-nd several of a family to mourn ; their loss-.
