Road Construction in Clutha.
TO THE' EOTTO*.
SiRj — You will oblige the- ratepayers of this district by inserting the following-) facts : — There has been a. road- surveyed" to^ connect Tautuku Bay with Tahakopa "Val- I ley. Since that survey was made the railway has been opened' to Ratanui, and is in course of construction to the valley. The road is not required now, but the, CluthaCounty Council has thought proper to expend the land' revenue that it received from; this. block on that' road. The. cost of constructing this road would run well into four figures, but the land revenue from this block would, not construct this road ' in 50 years-, as all this land.' is withdrawn from sale- and is a timber reserve. It is extraordinary that a body of practical men like tha Clutha County Council should allow the money to he spent on work that is of no benefit to any person, in the district. If ths money- were spent on the Main road,, in filling up the holes, it would be a great benefit to the people using it. The Clutha County Council g»ve this useless work to men living, seven miles from here, and the men who are living on tho block, and who paid the money in ratesi and. rent, knew SSfching' about this jab until they saw thsmen working- at it. This is not the first time that- the revenue- has been uselessly spent . here. If the Clutha. Gountv Council is, not- responsible for, the useless expenditure of the people's. money. £ would iike to know, who is. — It am, etc-, A Ratepaos. Papatowai, May- 20.
