CIVIL SERVICE OF SUPERANNUATION. WELLINGTON, May 12.

At the Post and Telegraph social Sir J". CJ. Ward said he would give his hearty assistance in having a superannuation scheme put on the Statute Book. He hoped his hearers would tak" the suggestion he had made them not to attempt to play a lone hand. It was only by laro;e numbers joining in a great superannuation scheme that they could hope to build one up that would stand the test of adverse criticism and actuarial examination, and receive the endorsement of the people for that stability ■which only numbers oould give. Members of the Post and Telegraph Department (numbering 2018) would recognise at once that if they were joined with the civil service branch of the colony, and perhaps with the teaohers, who were also desirous of having a superannuation scheme, they oould put upon the Statute Book a device that would stand all the tests he had referred to, and in time receive the encomiums of neople who doubted at the moment whether these schemes could work out as actuarial successes. Personally, he was certain if they could set 5000 or 6000 people into the superannuation scheme, and the civil service was included, they could obtain a'l the material advantages they hoped to pet from a scheme of their own. both for themselves and for those dependent on them. The Premier, he said.- was already favourable to a superannuation scheme, and would do his best with his colleagues to prepare a scheme which would commend itself to Parliament.
