A RAINY DAY.
Biting winds and rain-mists chill, Smoke-clouda belching from chimneys tall, , The ceaseless tramp by hollow and hill, The traffic blundering through it all; Birds a-twitter in cosy nooks Up in the eaves of the walls of stone j People passing with gloomy looks, Or halting to gossip in low, hushed tone;-" A sun that glimmers the clouds between, The next moment smothered in skies of grey, . . . And the dreary round of life's routine Seems drearier still on a, rainy day. —E. L. EfitE, Auckland, May, 1905. <
