RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

FORBURY PARK RACING CLUB'S

WINTER MEETING. The postponed meeting of the Forbury Park Racing Club was held at Forbury Park on Saturday, the weather being beautifully fine and the attendance large. The track was very heavy and holding, but, despite this drawback, some interesting sport was witnessed. The lawn a.nd grand stand presented quite an animated appearance, and the proceedings were enlivened by the playing of the Kaikorai Band, which gave popular selections during th-e afternoon. Fifteen bookmakers paid the outside fee of three guineas, and 11 paid the inside fee of seven guineas.

Cuirosettia won the Trial Handicap from end to end, and Yankee Doodle cut down his field in good style in the Trot. Casque drew out from the rise of the barrier in the principal race of the day, sund won comfortably, *" after never being headed. A good race was witnessed in the Hack Handicap, and in a good punishing finish down the straight the judge failed to separate Smallshot and Rubrette. Favouritism was pretty well evenly divided between Casque and Regiment in the Musselburgh Handicap, but the latter drew out from the rise of the barrier, aoid won with a bit to spare from Trentbridge. A fine race was witnessed in the Mile and a-half Trot, and there was very little between the placed horses as they moved past the post. The Welter Handicap was a splendid race, and within a hundred yards from home whips were- out on Apprentice. Trentbridge, Red-and-black, and Rubrette, who were racing in close order. Apprentice stuck to his task, and gained the judge's verdict by a neck. The officials of the club were all in their places, wih the exception of Mr Jeffs, clerk of the course, whose position was filled by Mr H, J. Gourley. The fields were well despatched by Mr L. C. Hazl&tt, and the judging of Mr W. J. Gore gave every satisfaction. Mr W. Mills was clerk of scales, and Mr E. L. Macassey was kept busy in his capacity of secretary. The thanks of the press representatives are again due to Mr Macassey for his unremitting attention in the direction of supplying them with information. Mr J. Loughlin kindly supplied the odds. Time, Imdn 24sec. NORTH OTAGO WINTER MEETING. (By Our Speciaj. Rkfob.tu.> First Dai — Wednesday, May 24. The North Otago Jockey Club commenced its winter meeting in 6n« weather. There was present probably what constituted a record paddock attendance, but the outside enclosure did not appear to be as well patronised as has formerly been noticed. The track was in good order, but inclined to be a trifle holding and slow owing to being top*-drf.Baed over th© last six fui longs, although some of the times registered hardly suggests that state of things. Since the spring meeting the club has, in addition to improving the track, enhanced the appearance of th© course by painting th© stand, fences, etc.. and effecting other minor improvements. During the day some good sport was witnessed, and the class of horse 9 seen out collectively represented the best quality seen on the track in recent years. A good race was provided by the Empire Handicap, and there was not a great deal between the placed horses as they flashed past the post. Convoy, who looked considerably more forward than he did when he went out to contest the Great Autumn, made a bold bid for victory at the finish after being ridden a patient and well judged race by Derrett, but the Vanguard gelding failed in the last few strides after looking to possess a. good winning chance when 100 yards from ' "home. Quagga won the Welter with a trifle to spare, and Regiment had possession of hia race a furlong from home, although his rider kept him moving until the stake was in safe keeping. During the day some money was shut out of the machine, but the total was £1864 10s, against last year's £1606. A number of bookmakers was licensed by the chib. The management of the meeting was excellent. Details: — WINTER HANDICAP, Of 45sovs ; second horse ssovs. Six furlongs. 22 — Mr H. Radium caused some delay through being re%ictaut to face the barrier, and, in an otherwise excellent start, lost a bit of ground through hanging. When the field was sent away Stepaside was the first to show out, but ivaa sup p' anted at th.c end of a furlong by Guard of Honour and Don Bell. The field ran in fairly close order until turning for home, when Radium moved up on the outside, supplanted Guard of Honour in the lead, and went on and won with a bit to spare by a little over a, length from Paparoa, who came with a lata run, and beat Giiard of Honour by close on two lengths for second place. The iNortli Otago Jockey Club concluded its meeting in gloriously fine weather, and thera was again an excellent attendance. Soino good sport was witnessed during the day, and 1 , taking the feathering all round, it was th»

most successful meeting held on the track in recent years. In the big race Convoy stopped badly when three furlongs from home, after piloting his opponents up to that stage and appearing to possess a good winning chance. The strongest opposition to Tirole came from the resurrected St. Leger gelding St. Michael, ■who formerly carried the colours of Mr G. G. Stead. The colours of Mr Buckley were carried into second place on five occasions prior to Master Alix's win in the last race on the programme, and when the Stepniak gelding's \*ictory was assured an ovation marked the popularity of the win. The starting was capably performed on. both days by Mr L. C. Hazlett, and lie had some awkward horses to handle in several races which enhanced the merit of tis work. The management of the meeting ■was excellent, and the various officials woried bard to achieve the success -which rewarded their efforts. Speculation was fairly brisk, and £2174 10s was put through the machine, making £4086 for the meeting, as against last year's total of JJ3Q42. Several bookmakers were again licensed, and were accorded a fair amount of patronage. Details: —
