In the JWanganui Steepelchase Defoe jumped 19 nences without making a mistake. He stayed pthe distance, and challenged Evening, which rliad been allowed to gain a good lead at the end. The Maiden Steepelchase on the £tast day looks a gift for Defoe. This race Lwill be a good schooling for the Great SNort-hern* run on the following Wednesday. BCruesot has been solidly supported by Ms confbieotion for the double. At Wanganui he one of his knees, and was right out of fit wheai he baulked at the hencoop, after going Swo miles. C. F. Vallance had bad luck to lose Raema's services at Wanganui. The Forester gelding was a well-known figure at Wairarapa meetings, and scored his last wins on the second day of the Wairarapa Racing Club's Easter meeting. His dam, Ruth (by Patriarch — Ro3© d' Amour), produced several other winners, including Obed, Coaz, Comet, and Osman. Knight, who for a number of years acted as handicapper for the Takapuna Jockey Club and other clubs in the Auckland district, left on Saturday last by the Gothic for England. Knight, who has not enjoyed the best of health lately, does not intend to return to th© colony. W. Young, who scored on Auratus in the Connolly Handicap, scored in the same race last year on Inglewood. Since W. Price, who gets plenty of flat riding, and does it well, retired from tho jumping ranks, W. Young is the lightest horseman in tho colony riding over fences.

Iseult, which showed good form at Wanganui, is trained at Waverley by C. Birbett. Other members of this mentor's string consist of th© three-year-old half-ister by St. Leger to Huku; six-year-old gelding by Haire — Doubtless; Rosalinda, by Westmere, four years; and a handsome hack, Curassow, gelding 1 . F. Davis, the well-known rider, was satisfied to look on at the Wanganui meeting. He goes to Auckland this week to ride Rose Madder in her engagements there.

The Vanguard gelding Killarney is to be spelled . until next season.

The committee appointed by th© Masterton Racing Club to deal with the matter of suggesting dates for the meeting recommended October 26 and 27, 1905, and March 29 and 30, 1906. Although October 26 was the second day of the Carterton show, the stewards decided to adopt the dates recommended.
