LICENSING COMMITTEES' EXPENSES.
INVERCARGILL, May 18.
To-day the Southland County Council sued tho Winton Borough for its share of tbo licensing expenses of the Awarua, district, which the defendant body refused to pay until the amount set forth in the certificate of the chairman of the Licensing- Committee for members' expenses attending meetings was reduced to the actual cost of travelling. It appeared that a few years back the total expenses ran from a pound or two to nil, but amounted to £24 this year. The former S.M. (who was at Winton on court business any way) did not charge expenses but Mr M ■ Carthy S M , as chairman of the committee, had! the bench, the magistrate (Mr Biddell) being interested, doubted whether he had power to deal with a certificate made by a brother magistrate, and took time to consider. __
