THE GAELIC SOCIETY.

CALENDAR FOR THE WEEK.

An enthusiastic committee meeting' of th» Gaelic Society was held on. Friday evening in the Excelsior Hotel, presided over by the chief (Mr Dugald M'Pherson), to make arrangements fcrr the forthcoming ceilidh, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to the erection of a. cairn to perpetuate the memory of Quinton M'Kinnon (the discoverer of the M'Kinnon Pass between Lake Te Anau and MilforcC Sound), who perished in these regions in 1893. The chief feature of the ceilidh will be a. lecture by Mr Thomas Mackenzie, M.H.R., who was associated with M'Kinnon at that time. The lecture will be- illustrated by som» very fine limelight views of the country explored and incidents connected therewith. Allusion will also be made to the search instituted by* the Daily Times Company for the late Professor Mainwaring Brown, who was lost in the Matterhorn mountains in 1888. M'Kinnon, Malcolm Ross, and Mr Mackenzie took part in. that work^ In the course of coirv-ersaAiqn another wellknown and honoured name came \vp in connection mtl( the Beai/Ch. far M'Kinnon — namely, that of Richard Henry, w-Ho did faithful service, and finally cut out M'Kiimon's ham» on the granite block which marks the spot near which M'Kinnon was logt. In addition to being an explorer, M'Kinnon was an enthusiastic Rugby football player, and- it is the intention to ask the cordial assistance of the Rugby; Union, which we feel assured will be spontaneously given, to make the meeting a success. It was decided to;hold the meeting on Friday, 16th June (the agricultural show week). lit was also stated that the best musical talent would be engaged for the occasion.
