AMERICA v. BRITAIN. (From the Pittsburg Dispatch.) HORR'S CLEVER PLAY. The Scottish team has been unable to vanqviish the mighty Horr of Buffalo. They worked up a "cook" for the Buffalo expert which seemed destined to score a victory. It was on the "Second Double Corner/ opening and was unquestionably one of the finest pieces of checker strategy that has been introdticed into the contest. Horr slipped through with flying colours, much to the surprise of the Scottish analysts. The game was a draw, and one of the finest in the contest. The game ran as follows: — Game 5948. — "Second Double Corner." 11 15 28 ID 11 16 22 17 8 11 - 10 10 24 19 8 11 25 22 4 8 26 22 7 14 15 24 22 18 16 SO 17 13 10 15 32 28 Then 3 7, and a diagram of the situation at its most deceptive and, in fact, critical point is given below: — Ferric (Great Britain) — White.

Horr (United States)— Black. - White to move. 22 17 15 22 10 7 11 15 3 7 5 9 7 10 23 19 11 16 10 7 15 19 28 24 615 *30 26 16 19 27 24 - 10 15 19 10 2 11 7 3 20 27 17 10 9 14 26 10 19 28 31 15 * If 7 3 had been played here Horr was prepared to astonish his opponent with another beautiful draw by playing 22 26, 29 22, 14 18, 22 15, and 5 9.

Of the two games won by Horr, the Yankee, from Hynd, the most interesting was played as follows, Hynd playing black: —

Denvir (United States)— White.

Morrall (Great Britain) — Black,

It was Morrall's turn to move. He responded with 10 15, when he should have played 1 ft.

After 10 15 the situation is an interesting one, as it terminates in what is known as "Bowen's Twins." The play continued as follows: —

And ultimately won by position known as "Bowen's Twins."

This was a "Single Corner" opening. Morrall, by a bit of misreasoning, mentally made itj from the position on diagram, 1 5, 11 15,

10 28, 18 15, then 9 14 allows three for one, "and I'm beaten. Let's trust to luck; here goes 10 15." Mr Morrall failed to note that after 18 15, 21 25 forces the win. He saw it when too late; or 21 15 wins by allowing choice of takes, then 1 5 and win. Two ways to get it and missed them both. _ Even so 3 7 is a safe draw, or maybe a third way to win — pouf.
