SOUTHLAND AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
INVERCARGILL, April 10.
The entries for the Axemen's Carnival, to be held here at Easter, constitute a record, and their number places the Southland carnival in the position of premier fixture among chopping and sawing meetings in Australasia. For the chopping and sawing events alone 215 entries have been received, the competitors hailing from Victoria, Tasmania, the North Island, the West Coast, and every nook and corner of Otago and Southland. Although very handsome prizes, ranging from £50 to £o, are given, the entry fees for many events exceed the prize-money. For the £50 Chop there are 34 entries, and the same number for the Maiden Chop, while for the Standing Handicap Chop there are 41. In the Handicap Double-handed Sawing 22 pairs will compete. The entries for the cycling and running events have not yet closed, but a sufficient number have already been received to make it certain that the Axemen's Carnival this year will establish an easy record not only for New Zealand, but for Australia as well.
