DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS SOCIETY.

The Executive Committee of the Dunedin Competitions Society has practically decided on the items of the programme for the next contests. There are to be two adult choir competitions. The number of the choir in one fa to be unlimited, the music selected- being Gcunod's anthem " By Babylon's wave," and a cradle song by Smart. The second one will be for choirs of the maximum strength of 25, the music being Foster's "Be glad and rejoice" and Rocket's " Madeleine." There is also to be a competition for choirs of 16 male voices, the music to be " The Lovers," by Koschat, and a competition for choirs of 12 female voices, the music being " Stars of the summer night," by J. G. West. Choirs of school children of a maximiim strength of 40 will be invited to take part in p actic*i song competition, each to select its own song. Among other novelties will be an illustrated song contest, in which the competitors will select their own siibject and provide the slides, the society supplying the lantern. A character song, in which each competitor picks his own song from a- comic opera, is also a new departure. In the Scottish song contest each one competing will be allowed to select his own song from Bailey and Ferguason's No. lor No. 2 series. Sullivan's " O swallow" is selected for the soprano solo competition, and -Sullivan's " Tears, idle tears," for the mezzo-soprano. Schumann's " Aufschuring " has been chosen for the principal pianoforte solo, and Tour's " Rusaalka" for the contest for candidates under 18 j^ears of ago who have never won a prize. There is to be a champion pianoforte duet contest, open to professionals or amateurs, the music being a Polonaise by Dvorak. The subject for the prepared speech is " Would it be to the advantage of this colony that the Government should own ali the freeholds?"
