THE VISIT OF FATHER HAY S .

A deputation, comprising members of three of the Protestant congregations in Port Chalmers, waited on the Mayor (Mr D. A. De M'aus) on Friday to request him. to call a public meeting of all citizens interested on Tuesday evening next, in the Council Chambers, to arrange for a reception and welcome to be given to the celebrated Father Hays. The deputation pointed out that Father Hays to a philanthropist whose burning eloquence in support' of righteousness had caused his name to become one to coniure with. He was expected, on the 20th April. He was a man of ancient family and noble gifts. He had, in nine years of indefatigable labour and devotion, wrought miracles of reform, and so won the approval of Pope Leo XTTI as to lead him to denominate him "A T.ue Apostle." He had a 1 so received the- highest commendation and the apostolic benediction of Pope Pius X, as a modern Father Matthew. Sectarian jealousy bhould not so belitt'e them ir. a case like this as to prevent their showing at least as much honour to a man of his moral eminence and repute, not merely as an orator, but as a loving servant fcr mankind, as they did to visiting athletes and exceptionally - gifted miisicians. Father Hays refused to be under any society or to be tied to any party, desiring to speak only where he had the sympathy and support of all classes of the citizens in his efforts to uplift the erring. The Mayor, on these broad grounds, and learning that to give him such a welcome was the desire of a large section of the citizens, acceded to the request of the deputation, and fixed Tuesday evening next for the meeting. The deputaKou thanked him and withdrew.

WOLFE'S SCHNAPPS is exceedmgly low. A cheering cordial.
