There is no hard and fast rule as to the depth of the roots of trees. It is just a question of how deep in the gi-ound the roots can continuously find water, and the diagram we givo shows how gr&atly the depth of the roots may vary. A tree, say, sljft high, growing in ground that is natu-
ltillj wel' supplied with water, maj Tiav-e roJts that only go 10ft down. But a tree giowing say, on a sand l.ill, or oih^:- dry pl-i^o. such as a palm iree in" a -lese-'t, nu's ha-\o root* that, in search of watev, e\t-.r.d to a depth of even 100 ft.
