WELLINGTON NOTES.

St Owx.oosr»!a.

March 30,

The Wellington Ra-eing Club was unfortunate in the weather experienced for the opening day of its autumn meeting. It rained in the morning, and a strong northerly wind blerf aIJ day, making matters very unpleasant for those that did attend. The totalisator turnover (£6537) showed a falling off of £2462 ss, compared with last year's. Ths amount named included £80 in doubles. Thirty-four backers of Signalman and Boris received £23. Signalrcian-Chryseis would have returned £17. The fields throughout the day were smail, the largest being eight in the Thompson, and seven in the Tinakori Hack. Several o". the races were processions, and there were no exciting finishes. Five of the races were won by hor&es trained by J. Prosser at I'orirua. C. Jenkins had a ride in all the flat races, and at the end of the day his record was : Five firsts, one second, once unplaced. Magnificent (liable-mate of Levant and Defoe) was pulled out of the Hurdles. Trumpery, who was sent out favourite, made a poor =ihow, never being prominent. RungE,ravva, who was making his first appearance in open company, and had not raced oveT a mile and a-half in hack company, scored a hollow victory. Levant, who had not sported silk since she met with an accident afc Taranaki, ran well for about a mile and ahalr*. The Waiwetu Handicap was an uneven match between Gold Crown and Veneer (Mahutonga's brother), who has recently shown some form on the West Coast. The latter was in trouble before half the distance had been covered. Veneer was brought out again later in the day, when he came a bad last. Signalman practically led from end to end in the Thompson. He scored the first win in the race lor Sir George Clifford, who was present to see his colt race. Auratus, who carried lightest weight, was best backed. He ran well, but found the pace too solid. Ballarat ran well for seven furlongs, and was then eased off. Shrapnel Shell was the first horse beaten. Ghoorka ran a good race, finishing fourth. Royal Blue (trained at Opaki) won the Silverstream Hack Handicap all the way, and beat one of the poorest fields that has contested a similar class of race at the Hutt for some time. Only Boris and Chryseis started in the Railway, and the later was beaten at halfway. Two of the four runners for the Heretaunga Handicap are in F. Higgott's stable. Hydrant was a strong fancy, but was easily beaten by Flnmen. Orloffs sister (Dalny) made her first appearance in the Challenge Stake. She ran green, finishing in the rear. Machine Gun led Achilles for about three furlongs. The Medallion horse afterwards had matters all his own way, and won under a strong pull. Maul, who won a double at Horowhenua, was odds-on favouiite for ths Tinakori Hack, and won Lard held.

April 1. The weather was wet and stormy lor the concluding day of {he Thompson Handicap meeting, the going heavy, and the atendancs small. The tote turnover for the meeting showed a decrease of £9787 compared with last year. Wi Hutara would not start Rungarawa m the Hurdles on account of the heavy going. Had he baen started he would have won easily. Lissa beat his two opponents, who are stable-mates, without being challenged at any part of it. He paid the good price of £2 Ss for first favourite in a field of three. "Rapids was withdrawn from the Hutt Handicap. After being along with. Immersion and Shrapnel Shell for half a mile G-old Crown shook them off, and won, hard held, from Regulation. The latter was well backed on her running in the Thompson Handicap, and, in consequence, Gold Crown paid the good price of £3 6s. Nightfall was backed down to 3 to 1 on for the St. Leger, and won in the easiest possible manner. Signalman was being ridden after going a mile and a-quarter. Flanien outstayed ths

Thompson winner, and got sec6nd money. Isightfall's success was heartily cheered. This -,\as Mr Stead's third win in seven years; his previous successes were achieved by Altair and Cruciform. The time, although the slowest on record, was fair, considering the going and the easy manner in which the race was run. Scratchings reduced the field for the Muratai Hack Handicap to three. Pardon, who was evidently improved by tha gallop the previous day, settled Royal Blue (whom he was meeting on 151b better terms) without difficulty. Regulation was the only withdrawal from the Autumn Handicap. Auratus (owned and trained at Waverley) won from end to end. The gelding has raced successfully this season over six and seven, furlongs, this being the first time he had got a distance. Exraoor (who looked big) was done with at six furlongs. Two furlongs from home Ghoorka looked like making a race of it with Auratus, but died away in the run home. Shrapiiel Shell iwho had raced earlier in the day and was sun-el by =olt poing) beat Hydrant by j. !.-■> <*th for second place, Cannie Chiel v;- ,v good fourth, and Ghoorka fifth. M- Ilartgill placed Cannie Chiel third. PreluJp's utibeaten record was broken in ihe Pacific Handicap. Chryseis met her 'uveniip opponents on favourable ternis. Grand Circle 'ft>ipsy Grand — Coronal), half-brother to Gold Medallist, made his debut in this- ra»», Lnt he ran last throughout. Only Boris anil Ita^uka. started iri the Suburban Handicap, the latter nsing in troubla two furlongs ficm home. Some interest was taken in the Belmont Hack Handicap, which was th^ second leg of the- doublp. It brought out the best field of the tlay. Tlif Porirua stable started jlau; and Aolsa. Vv 7 an - arapa-o T vned Declination (.Stepnak — Illusion) woii c. -..'_ ,t the finish from ihe Porirua pair.
