TOWNSHIP OF MATAURA. SOUTHLAND.
THE MATAUKA BRANCH CF THE SOUTHLAND FROZEN MEAT COMPANY'S WORKS: GROUP OF BUTCHERS AND VIEW IN THE KILLING DEPARTMENT
The Dunedin City Council recently held a sale of the disused horse cars, which have been displaced by the electric system. The cars were bought for different purposes, sudi a=s summer houses, seaside rests, etc. In the above snapshots, a car bought for the latter purpose, is seen in the first view on its way to Portobello, turning the corner at it. ant's Braes, and in the second view, at its final resting place.
Mr Young, town clerk of Invercargill, has the originals from which these pictures are taken. They are beautifully coloured and woven in white silk. The memorial ribbons, for such they apparently were, were the work of a Coventry ribbon weaver of probably 89 years ago. No attempt was made to' colour the landscape or background, which ia, nevertheless, perfectly depicted, but "Puffing Billy" and a.so the ploughing team are gorgeously coloured in silk, which, is as fresh as when the ribbon issued from the loom. The reproductions give only a faint idea of the beauty of the pictures, the colouring being, of course, their chief attraction.
