THE SINISTER FOR MINES.

I REEFTON, March 6. f The Hon. J. M'Gouan, ilimster for Mines, j arrived at Reeftcn on Friday afternoon, and j was occupied during the evening in receivj ing deputations all midnight. A countycouncil deputation strongly urged the completion of the Reefton-Marua road, a, distance of 14- mik^, pointing cut tho urgency of connecting the Hot Springs byroad to enable invalids to avail themselves of their curative qualities. Numbers of I people from all parts cf the island had, j under great existing difficulties, availed themselves of the ad\antages derived from the hot baths, and were land in their praises cf the benefits obtained therefrom. It was j a matter of notoriety that in the past a number of people, principally males, hadl derived great relief from a course of bathing. Females, however, suffering from ailj ments, were in a large measure unable to take advantage of the baths by reason of hardships and inconvenience entailed in travelling there. Mr M'Gowan, while in sympathy with the request, pointed out to councillors that the matter came under tho control of Lands and Tourists Departments. On Saturday morning Mr M'Gowan formally opened the Inangahua Landing railway bridge in the presence of a large gathering, the christening ceremony being performed by Miss Ore?an. The bridge is what is known as a Tru*s bridge, set in connected iron cylinders. It is 286 ft long and 15ft wide, the upper structure resting on a steel girdor llin in depth by |in in width, and has all tha appearance of great strength. The Minister left for Greymouth by Saturday afternoon's train.
