GREAT BRITAIN v. AMERICA.

Solutions to Problems.

Problem 2264 (by the late Jas. Wylie).— Black: 3, 4, 5, kings 7, 30. White: 16, 25, king 14, 18, 20. White to play and win.

The English Draughts Association Selection Committee met at Manchester on January 14, and chose the five players to represent England on Lhe British team for the forthcoming international match, as follows. — W. Gardner, Lrc-eds (champion* 1&38-9) ; A. Hynd, Manchestei (champion 1900-1); W. HalUwell, Duckenfie^; A. Jordan. London (champion 1832-8); and H. Morrall, Liverpool (champion 1804-s^ ; with F. Tescheleit, London, as reserve. Of the five players selected, Halliwell is the only one who has not held the English championship, fcmt Vis finp performances' in the last' two international matches with Scotland, coupled with his victory in the last Lancashire tourney, fairly entitle him to a place in the team.

The five Scottish players to complete the team have not yet been officially announced, but we (Leeds Mercury) understand the selection has been rade as follows: — R. Jordan. Edinburgh (ex-champion of the workl) ; J. T^erris, G-reenock (ex-champion of the world) ; R. Stewart, Blairadam (five times Scottish champion) ; G. Buchanan, Glasgow (Scottish ohampior 1905) ; and H. Henderson, Muirkirk ; with J. Searight, Glasgow, as reserve.

According to latest advices, thy American team is as follows:—The Eastern Stages are represented by Barker, Freeman, Dearborn, Grover, and Heffner; the Middle States by Schaefer, Horr, and Head; and the West by Heftei and Denvir. The match will take place at Boston during this month, and the team was to embark at Southampton last Saturday, the 4th.

Problem 2265 (by J. G. Keenan).—Black: 12, kings 24, 28. White; 20, kings 15, 19. "White to play and draw.

TO CORRESPONDENTS. W. H. S., Wanganui.—You are evidently under the impression that the play you give on G arno 5904 leaves Blacli a man up ; but that is not sc—the pieces are level, and we fail to see any hope of a Black ,rin. In re Problem 2260, the line you suggest only draws. Position:—Black: 1, 2. ki^gs 14, 22. White: 5, 9, 13, kings 7, 11. Black to play and draw.

Mr Borehpm had this play wiitten, we know ; but ho evidently overlooked it in wilting his solution for publication. No steps have been taken m connection with the tourney this year so far as we know, and it is ajrnost hopeless now to make the attempt. This is to be regretted, as the tourney gives a, fin© impetus to the game throughout the colony. We can assign no reason for the lapse. F. M'P., Wairnate.-i-Your solution of Problem 2268 is correct. Please enclose full name, not necessarily for publication. That is always the rule; but apart from thai we ehould like to know you, {y$ you are gyiclgjitly SB efiC.erien.ceJ, £isi.*£«^ * ~~"~~ """
