MAORIS XOT TO BE TESTED

Mr Reid, the Federal Premier, ha decided to issue instructions not to applT the language test to Maoris. A report on the recent case called for by the External Affairs Department shows that both Maoris v.?re asked to pass the- test in English, but did not do so. Mr Reid, in answer to the question. '" What was to be the general policy with regaid to the admission of MaoiisY" spid: "Maoris looking for work or visit.ng Australia for other purposes mar now enter without restriction. I regard them on the samo footing as ordinary New Zealand white colonists. They will, of course, have to comply with the contract labour clause the same as English

The Premier ha« received tbe following cable from Mr R?id. the Federal Premier, with reference to the exclusion of two Maori*: — " Stn't-t inquiry ha= shown that the Maoris in question were both a«ked to undergo the education test, and did not attempt to comply with it. I ,wish. however, to «ay I have issued instructions that in future Maoris are not to be asked to undergo any such test."
