RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

FORBUHY PARK RACING CLUB.

Stewards: President, Hon. H. Gourley; vice-president, Mr J. Jeffs ; Messrs F. Carter, W. CuHle, M. Coughlan, L. C. Hazlet*, G. Hedges, T. Heffernan, T. E. Jefcoate, J. Jeffs, J. M'Kewen, John Rosa, H. Shrimpton, C. Tilburn. Officers- Hon. judge, Mr W. J. Gore; lion, treasurer, Mr L. O. Hazlett; hon. clerk of the course, Mr J. Jeffs ; hon. starter, Mr L. C. Hazlebt ; hon. surgeons — Drs de Lautour, Stanley Batchelor, and O'Neill ; hon. veterinary surgeons, Messrs Snowball and Hamilton; hon. clerk of scales, Mr William Mills; hon. timekeeper, Mr E. Souness ; hon. handicapper, Mr H. J. Gourley; secretary, Mr E. L. Maoassey. Splendid weather and good attendances seem to nave identified themselves with meetings held by the Forbury Park Ra.cing Club, and, despite the stroiig counter attraction provided in the shape of the Australia-Otago cricket match, there was a remarkably large number

present at Forbury Park on Saturday, when

the club held its autumn meeting. Stylishly dressed ladies were conspicious about the lawn, and evinced the most lively interest in the iaces,on the remits of which probably depended

numerous pairs of gloves, if not something more substantial. The services of the Kai-

korai Brass Band had been secured, and the "band, under the conductorship of Mr G. B. Laidla-w, played selections during the after-

Among the visitors to the course were

the Hon. G. M'Lean and Mr R. Ewing, president and hon. judge of the D.J.C. respectively, and the latter gentlema-n, in the absence, in t&e earlier stages at any rate, of the club's judge (Mr Gore), kind'iy officiated in his place. Mr L. C. Hazlett was successful in getting his fields well away, Mr H. J. Gourley's handicapping resulted in some interesting sport being provided, Mr J. Jeffs acted as clerk of the course with Ms customary a,bility, and Mr E. L. Macassey filled the position of secretaif ■"with conspicuous success, and proved uniformly attentive and courteous to all with whom he was brought in contact. Mr J. Loughlin kindly supplied the starting prices. Nineteen bookmakers' paid the outside fee of £3 3s, and eight paid the inside fee of £& 6s, and fair prices were on offer. The track was a bit slow, but presented a fine appearance, and some excellent racing was witnessed during the day.

Sarchedon was prominent from end to end in the Trial Handicap, and finally won comfortably from the top-weight, Metford. Avenai comfortably silenced the opposition met in the Mi!e Trot. All those colouring 011 the card for the Forbury Handicap faced the starter. An even money chance was made by" Brighton, who, aiter being prominent to the honi? turn, died away, the -winner turning up in Stepenfeldt, -who had gone out at the nice price of 4's to 1. Stepenfeldt appeared to be in trouble going along the back, but he got an opening on the rails at the home turn, and won comfortably over the last furlong. Another even money favourite in Jewel Case was " downed " in the Hack Handicap. Paparoa, who had been among the starters for the Trial Handicap, put up Blb over-weight, and won comfortably although his winning margin was a narrow one. Jew-el Case, who -was made favourite, appeared to get into a bad position going along the back, and could make no impression upon the leaders at the business end. cf the journey. Red Ronald ran well for four furlongs, but failed to see the journey out. He had been let out of his box by some unknown person during the previous night, ajid this would not tend to increase his chances in the race. He was withdrawn from the flying Handicap, which was a splendid betting race. The public evidently found some difficulty in roaking the favourite. Replete was most in demand, but Heirloom, who opened at 3's to" 1, but tightened -to 5' 9 to 2, won after a splendid race. Replete was responsible for the pace in the early part, but both Heirloom and Brighton waited on the leaders until the borne stretch, when they moved up. Heirloom, en whom M'Comb rode a splendidly judged race, made a generous response to "his rider'fi final call, and just beat Brighton; Replete, very close up, third. The Mile and a-Hall Tiot was practically a duel between Veda and Reprieve over the last mile. Veda had been well ouit by herself up to a mile, but stopped badly after getting that distance, and, though she made up ground in the last part, she suffered defeat by three lengths at the hands j of Reprieve. O'Connell, on the winner, was fined £1 for disobedience to the starter. In the W^eltsr another good betting race was provided, and Tugela, Koputai, Redstart, and Sarehedon were solidly supportedT* Redstart was prominent with Sarchedon from the rise of the barrier, but the latter 1 retired in the straight, and Redstart won comfortably at the finish. Racing past the six-furlong post both Brighton and Donna Rosa were going very strongly two lengths in front of Visionary. Turning into the back stretch Brighton showed the way to Donna Rosa by a length, behind whom came Visionary; the others close up. Racing along the back Koputai and Visionary both improved their positions, and Stepenfeldt was being ridden to keep his place. Running- round the far turn Brighton and Koputai put in a gap of three lengths from Donna Rosa. Brighton was first into the straight, and both he and Koputai were tmder pressure. Once in line for home Brighton retired, and Stepenfeldt showed up on the rails, and, going on, won comfortably by three-parts of a length from Koputai, -who beat Visionary by half a length for second place; Donna Rosa and Brighton j close up. The weather proved very fine for the 1 eeoond day's racing of the Tahuna Park Trotting Club, which was held at Tahuna j Park yesterday, though the sky was over- | cast during the afternoon. The attendance, considering the strong counter-attraction furnished by the cricket match, was really very good, and among those present were the Hon. j G-eorge M*Lean, president, and Mr R. Ewing, i lion, judge of the D.J.C. The track was in splendid order, and some interesting racing , •wins witnessed, several close finishes being j fought out. "The money put through the i totaiisators -showed a decrease of £656 10s on the second 'day's racing of -the autumn meeting last year, the figures for yesterday being £2168 10s. while those of last year were £2324. ! Pearl M. drew out from the others I in the jiracelet, and won slowing down. A ; good go was witnessed for second place be- J tween her closest attendants. An interesting . race -was furnished by the Telephone Handi' ' cap, . in -which Big Jim made good use of his handicap, and acted without mistakes throughout the journey. Queen V. furnished his closest attendant all through, but the break she put in at the honie turn made the iimit horEe's chance of success easier. General Lyons began well in the St. Kilda Handicap, and was quickly in the lead, but had to stall off a determined challenge from Flower .Girl at the finish, and proved equal to the task. .Jet was close up throughout. Willinglon, who broke in the straight, was cannoned into by Jim Jim, and had his sulky broken.
